The Exile

Inspired by Fuente del Ángel Caído masterpiece of Ricardo Bellver located in the Buen Retiro Park in Madrid, Spain. The composition follows the idea of the fallen angel with whose exile began the era of all earthly suffering. The question remains why did Lucifer turn against his creator? Was it a sinister pride or was it a desperate grasp for freedom? In the right upper corner of The Exile I painted Egypt desert with pyramids and the Sphinx. A vague trail crosses the desert and via the mountains leads to the feet of fallen angel, where Moses is “opening” water right in the shadow of Lucifer. Some historical sources tell the Jewish people in ancient Egypt were no slaves but free citizens. In reality there is no evidence whatsoever that the Jews were ever enslaved in Egypt. Yes, there's the story contained within the bible itself, but that's not a remotely historically admissible source. I'm talking about real proof; archaeological evidence, state records and primary sources. Of these, nothing exists. So what had really happened? Was it an exodus or a volunteer exile? Back to the painting, where that road is taking my people to? Does it take us into the fruitless emptiness of the Sinai desert? Or into the endless winter of Russian Siberia? Had Jewish people indeed escaped from the slavery of Egypt or were they led into the eternal exile by a sinister ego of the pharaoh’s son Moses?
